ABSTRACT
Private property is central to libertarianism. This chapter surveys some of the major defenses of private property, and how it might support libertarianism. Two different arguments have been traditionally most influential on libertarian theorists, which are discussed in the context of the two historical figures most clearly connected to these arguments: Locke and Hume. The chapter closes by discussing critiques of these arguments and of private property more generally.
