ABSTRACT

Spirituality is integral to the development of the identity of a person with a disability. The exclusionary experiences in an ableist sociocultural context force a person with a disability to face numerous challenges. The ways in which the person copes with these challenges to transcend the limits posed by these experiences influence strategies to build resilience. This contributes to the integration of one’s identity. The ability to integrate various parts of one’s identity and synthesize them helps to become whole. Spiritual identity is the vehicle through which wholeness is accomplished. This chapter deals with an often-ignored aspect of spirituality in the lives of persons with disabilities. It describes the importance of integration and synthesis of identities for wholeness, drawn from the practice wisdom of the two authors.
