ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the relationship between inequality and the possibilities of environmental sustainability in the Latin American region. Given that the region is both rich in natural resources and ridden with environmental conflicts at the same time, and that it suffers from deep problems with respect to inequality and social exclusion, the chapter explores how these extremes offer some extra challenges for the region to create an inclusive and sustainable path for the future. Data from a recent survey conducted in seven countries are presented which offer some insights into the interactions between prosocial preferences and pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors, and how to tackle the double challenge of stopping environmental degradation while reducing inequality.
