ABSTRACT

In this chapter, school administrators and leaders are provided with a historical overview of special education advocacy and the critical role it has played in securing and protecting educational rights for American children with disabilities. Leaders will learn tips for establishing a climate of shared advocacy in school communities which can educate, equip, and empower educators and parents in their efforts to advocate at the local, state, and federal levels. The school leader's role as an advocate will be defined, and key competencies of effective advocacy will be explored at multiple levels.
