ABSTRACT

The terms acousmatic, electronic dance music (EDM), soundscape, and musique concrète all refer to music created using some kind of electronic technology, yet they are not interchangeable. More students have engaged with music technology as it has become increasingly accessible. Students need a guide for connecting the past with the present. The purpose of this chapter is to demystify the terms and names of electronic music; show the connection between past and present electronic music techniques used by composers, producers, and pop music artists; and guide students to create their own electronic music using inspiration and techniques from then and now.
