ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a methodology called “parametric analysis,” which addresses the fundamental question: “How do we experience electronic music, and how can we understand its structure?” The method asks listeners to pay attention not just to what they hear, but why they might hear it in a specific way. An analysis of Sud by Jean-Claude Risset shows how parametric analysis can result in a meaningful and critical perspective of any piece of electronic music without the need for technical experience in electronic music production. Works by John Chowning, György Ligeti, Jonty Harrison, and Elainie Lillios are suggested for further analysis.
