ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of topics related to helping students in distress, including the still evolving nature of faculty–student interactions, how college affects students, and how mental health concerns impact the educational process. The chapter also includes preliminary considerations when responding to students who are experiencing distress, an explanation of applicable terms and their definitions, and the theoretical framework that underpins successful interventions. In addition, information is outlined about indicators of students in distress, resources available to support students in distress, and making a referral.
