ABSTRACT

Those who teach in the subject area of the scientific and technical literature and the employers of science and engineering librarians frequently talk about the need to recruit, educate, and provide a field experience for future professionals. These discussions, while laudable, have not led to any systematic plan to meet the needs of employers for subject specialist librarians. This thematic issue of Science & Technology Libraries provides a fine beginning on a subject which deserves action by both library/information science educators and those in practice. Perhaps, this issue will provide the impetus by describing the activities of some of our peers.
