ABSTRACT

That Sound and Silence is still relevant today, in both its underlying philosophy and many of the specific activities, is demonstrated by the following project, which uses one of the original projects as its foundation. Graphic notation, where sounds are represented by varying visual shapes and colours, is now widely accepted in music education, both as a stimulus for composition and as a means of recording work-in-progress and completed pieces. The structure of the stand fed directly into discussions about the structure of the piece of music. The stand had been laid sideways on a table top and the children quickly remarked on the three main sections: the tripod legs to the left, the long central straight line in the middle, and the desk to the right. Each play-through was recorded on an iPad and then played back through external speakers so that the group could hear the piece as a whole without having to concentrate on their particular contribution.
