ABSTRACT

The concept ‘space’ is a broad one and includes aspects such as audience, environment, physical space, location and time. A performance in a rock band set-up at a gig venue has very different demands from that in a concert hall. Samba is widely recognised as a form of music and dance associated with Brazilian carnival. It is typically synonymous with the concept of outdoor partying and celebration. Where possible, this assignment would work well as a cross-curricular project with a dance class. Students should consider how to ensure that the music maintains a sense of interest for the audience/listener. Students need to consider: how the sound travels and what impact this has on composition; and how close they need to stand to one another and whether this has any effect on their movement/performance. In pop song composition modules, set up the classroom to feel like a live band gig in the final assessment lesson.
