ABSTRACT

Many artists, working in all disciplines, attempt to explore and interpret location through their work. There are landscape paintings, abstract sculptures and much poetry and prose which successfully evoke this sense of place. Musicians have also found place, real and imagined, to be a rich and rewarding area for exploration through music. There are many songs across all genres which make reference to spaces and places and, of course, much instrumental music. Some students will be happy to write about their chosen location while others may wish to explore their spaces through making pictures or dance/movement as a precursor to music making. Environments can be subtle and richly layered; moods might change and move over time. The melodies are played on guitars and the backings make use of appropriate synthesised sounds. Timings of initial entries of the tracks are shown in parentheses. Short interlocking figures could be devised on percussion instruments.
