ABSTRACT

This chapter explores parallels that can be drawn between use of a sketchbook in visual arts and in music. It considers the benefits of assembling fragments of musical ideas as a part of the composing process without the expectation of having an end in mind. Students’ sketchbooks can become a safe place where there is experiment, and where discernment is learned through the evaluation of ideas outside the formal process of composing. Students will own their sketchbook, and have relevant reference points to support more substantial composition tasks. Sharing some fragments of the experiences of two 15-year-old students shows how the sketchbook can be used as a tool for many students. Students looked carefully at ideas from pieces they were already playing or singing. Teachers found that students really embraced their sketchbooks, enjoying the familiarity with their visual arts sketchbooks.
