ABSTRACT

In order to place Sound and Silence within the fullness of John Paynter’s thought, this chapter draws on the breadth of his writing and the depth of his thinking over a 40-year period. But as significant as his writings are, in addition there are the reflections on his life in music education conveyed through a day-long conversation with him in 2008. By bringing these two sources together, it is possible to discern the central tenets of John’s practical philosophy of music education as it evolved through his immensely productive life. By setting out his arguments and deeply held convictions as faithfully as possible, it is hoped that his thinking will continue to be of relevance and a source of critical evaluation.
