ABSTRACT

Chapter 4, by Jon Heidt and Johannes Wheeldon, explores a variety of approaches to incorporate visuals in the classroom. The authors include numerous examples, from the use of maps to show historic developments in the field to geographically inspired efforts to map crime. A popular approach is to use film and television clips to highlight complex criminological concepts in ways that are more likely to reach students. The case study in this chapter is based on a distinctive approach to the traditional theory textbook. Designed to assist students, this chapter outlines seven unique steps that build, one on top of another, to aid students to grasp theory and its development, testing and analysis, and application.
