ABSTRACT

This article does not attempt to treat an ultimate issue: should libraries make the effort to collect obscene material. Rather, assuming the answer to be positive, it considers the problems which may face the librarian who has made the decision and proposes possible solutions. The initial selection determination should be governed by sound principles of the profession, all of which in some way or other return to the basic: “Select the right books for the library’s readers.” 1 If the legitimate educational or scientific ends of the patrons require the collection of pornographic material, then the librarian must face the knotty problem of placing it in the collection.
