A Review of Developments Leading to On-Line Union Listing of Serials

This paper reviews the development of the capability for on-line union lists of serials. The importance of standards, including the MARC-S format, the Conversion of Serials (CONSER) Project for serials bibliographic description, and the ANSI Standard for Serial Holdings Statements at the Summary Level, is stressed. The OCLC, Inc. on-line union listing capability and some of its implications are discussed.
