ABSTRACT
Various pressures are causing many publishers to consider alternatives to the conventional serials publication. These pressures are identified together with their effects. New ventures include simultaneous microform publishing, synoptics, in-house composition, and the on-line journal. Types of the latter are identified together with some current examples. The influence of new technology on the information community is discussed, and suggestions are made about possible future patterns of serials publishing.
