ABSTRACT

Serials automation at the University of California, San Diego, began in 1961 and has proceeded through several stages of development and computer hardware. The system consists of three major subsystems. The receiving subsystem programs generate transaction, cumulated receipts, claims, and want lists. The updating subsystem consists of procedures which create, change, and update master records. Finally, the printing subsystem transforms information in the master file into more usable formats. The nearly 45,000 records in the file are updated monthly. In addition, auxiliary programs produce shelflists, keyword lists, subject lists, and others. Eventually the entire serials system may be subsumed by bibliographic, acquisitions, and circulation systems which are in various stages of planning and development.
