ABSTRACT

The paper discusses the state of access to government periodical information in health sciences libraries. A scan of titles listed in major medical periodical indexes indicates that few government titles are regularly covered. Analysis of 1974 and 1984 Monthly Catalog listings for periodicals produced by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and its successor, the Health and Human Services Department, indicates a shift in the subject orientation and overall format of periodicals issued. Some special characteristics of medical libraries which exacerbate the problem of limited access are also briefly considered.
