ABSTRACT

In the environmental sphere, “governance” refers to “structures of authority that manage collective environmental problems and resolve conflicts between stakeholders”. It is generally acknowledged that regional governance constitutes an important component of the international environmental politics architecture. Environmental issues such as fresh water, nature, pollution, and habitats are more frequently dealt with in regional arrangements than in global ones. The two main instruments of regional environmental governance are regional agreements and regional organizations. Regional environmental organizations are international governmental organizations, which include states from a single region among their membership and which are created through an international agreement. Some regional environmental organizations were especially created to deal with environmental issues, such as the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River.
