ABSTRACT

The concept of security as such is elusive and open to many different interpretations. Arnold Wolfers summed up succinctly: “security, in an objective sense, measures the absence of threats to acquired values, and in a subjective sense, the absence of fear that such values will be attacked”. However, both climate security and human security have not necessarily shown securitization effects. One of the greatest beneficiaries of securitization of environmental change would be the military in developed nations, particularly when “environmental refugees” from developing countries are perceived as threats to national security. The human species facing the danger of extinction is now both the subject and the object of security concerns. The last few decades have witnessed a significant number of theoretical and empirical studies on environmental security.
