ABSTRACT

There is considerable experience with flexible transport services (FTS) gained over several decades, yet much uncertainty remains around the most effective way to deploy FTS. This chapter considers the development of FTS from its origins in Dial-a-Ride to current experience with Microtransit. Particular attention is given to the lessons to be learned from schemes which have been deemed both successful and less successful; these include the need for better targeting of user groups, effective marketing of services, appropriate use of technology and service integration. The chapter also explores the experience in rural areas, where evidence shows that FTS can be deployed as an effective component of an integrated transport offering. The chapter concludes with suggestions for future FTS design and associated research requirements.
