ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews current knowledge and key trends on the provision of service information for public transport. It considers the traditional approach of providing static information and the importance of standards. It also considers the growing interest in providing real-time information. Interactive and more personal approaches to the provision of information are then considered under the heading of user engagement. This includes experiential initiatives, websites, social media, and mobile applications. The chapter concludes by highlighting several areas of interest for future research, including user preferences, the integration of messages and media across offline and online spaces, issues associated with collaboration (e.g. with other providers of transport or travel planning services), and challenges associated with cyber security and personal privacy.
