ABSTRACT

From the perspective of a Black woman in the United States, I engage in a discussion about how criminology and science (specifically, biology) uphold similar oppressive values. Ingrained in criminology and biology are narratives that reduce human existence to categories – who is superior vs. who is inferior. In this chapter, I reflect on how problematic ideologies (e.g., inferiority vs. superiority) of criminology and biology converge in education, specifically science education, perpetuating oppression. I frame this analysis of biology and criminology through reflections on my own experiences, the past, the present, and the future.
