ABSTRACT

Although the polity affects the production and reproduction of the material conditions of life, economic sociologists give limited attention to the effects of polities on the economy. This chapter addresses this shortcoming by examining (1) issues relevant to economy and polity, (2) how the classical sociological theorists conceptualized the relationship between economy and polities, and (3) organizations as intermediaries between the economy and political embeddedness. This focus on organizations is important in the contemporary era when the resources held by giant corporations and other organizations enhance their capacity to influence the political embeddedness of the economy.
