ABSTRACT

Sustainable community development (SCD) is essential for the wellbeing of community residents. SCD requires people with differing perspectives to work together and make compromises. These include perspectives that highlight economic development, a healthy environment, and have concern for the welfare of low-income and minority residents. Unfortunately, these perspectives have historically been in conflict with each other. Most recently, however, there has been an effort to find common ground where the economy can flourish, the environment is protected, and the welfare of residents is not overlooked. Provided is a description of SCD, its historical emergence, and on-going initiatives to create and maintain SCD.
