ABSTRACT

Marxism differs from Economic Sociology in fundamental ways. Whereas the latter begins and ends with market capitalism as a singular and best form of economic activity and seeks to understand how markets are embedded with social relationships, Marxism sees market capitalism as the result of historical forces leading to different configurations at different time scales for which social relations emerge because of the operations of market capitalism. For Economic Sociology negative outcomes are exogenous, while for Marxism these outcomes are part of the normal workings of market capitalism, producing inequality, and inequities on a global scale.
