ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the multiple dimensions of the Chinese internet. It examines summarizes the rapid growth of cyberspace there and the persistence of a digital divide in the country. It also describes the geography of China’s internet in light of its profoundly uneven spatial development. The chapter then describes the growth and geography of e-commerce in China. The chapter concludes by noting the controversies pertaining to the internet in China and challenges to the government’s strict censorship, such as the Great Firewall.
