ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Google Earth and its by-products (e.g., Google Street View), which have had profound impacts of geographical imaginations across the planet, enhancing spatial thinking and education. It has also found its way into a variety of personal applications, such as virtual tours of parks, and in government, such as national security and public service provision. Academics have used Google Earth to study the structure of urban land use and in health geographies. Commercial applications include land cover studies and engineering services. The chapter also notes how it has been incorporated into consumer technologies such as location-based services.
