ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the history of the mobile internet in light of the smartphone, and the associated growth of Webs 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0. For many people, mobile internet access is the only or preferred means. The chapter addresses the impacts on everyday life, such as locative technologies, contextualized data and algorithmic searches, and mobile artificial intelligence. The chapter also addresses the seen and unseen consequences of mobile internet use, including the mobile digital divide and privacy concerns.
