ABSTRACT

Researchers are working on biofuels as alternate fuels. Biofuels are renewable fuels derived from biological raw material. Agricultural scientists are more concerned about biomass-based biofuels, as the use of biomass appears to be a viable alternative, especially for the on-farm use of fuels in stationary diesel engines, tractors and combines. Any organic plant material produced through photosynthesis via carbon dioxide fixation is biomass; this includes agricultural products and residues, fuel wood trees and agro-industrial waste materials. Gasifiers are usually classified on the basis of direction of fuel and air/gas flow in the reactor. There are four distinct stages in the preparation of bio-diesels. These are heating of oil; adding alkaline alcohol to oil and stirring the mixture; settling and separation of glycerol; and washing of bio-diesel with water and removal of water. In case of farm level bio-diesel production, the mixing and settlement can be carried out in the same container.
