ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the different aspects of public expenditure on education in the state of Punjab during the post-reform period. It gives an overview of the general practices of finance that have been adopted by different educational institutions in the recent past. The chapter specifies the data sources, general coverage, various concepts and methodology. The study focuses only upon the public expenditure component of overall educational expenditure, the other component of which i.e., private sector educational expenditure does not form part of the analysis. The chapter also deals with the different aspects of public expenditure on education such as growth over time, share of education in overall expenditure and income in the state, allocation to education in Punjab vis-a-vis other states, share of different categories of education in the overall educational budget and its distribution in Plan and non-Plan components.
