ABSTRACT

The great majority of persons of Punjabi origin living abroad are more than two to three generations old. The pioneer emigrants mainly belonged to the doaba region of Punjab and were independent landowning farmers. Punjabis are landowning and enterprising and they make a good living whatever they choose to do. The Indian community in USA is one of the richest minority communities, with Punjabis having a prominent position. However, they are less successful in Canada and the UK and are leaders in their local communities as well as nationally and internationally. Kharaudi is a reasonably well-off village with fertile land providing good income. Almost every household has at least some member abroad in USA, Canada, UK, other European countries or the Arab Emirates. The village people are well-educated and are doing well, especially some NRIs.
