ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests workable solutions that have been tried in a few villages in Punjab recently. The septic tank is the most widely used on-site wastewater treatment option in developed countries. In Punjab, houses worth several lac of rupees are without any septic tanks. No house worth more than a jhugee should be allowed to be built without the installation of a proper septic tank and at least some sort of a subsoil absorption system. In the case of the village of Kharaudi in the district of Hoshiarpur, there was a sand filter that was in operation for four years, the treated waterbeing discharged into a small facultative lagoon. The Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) has used the Small-Bore Sized Sewerage System in Ulana in district Patiala. Ulana village sanitation project only deals in separating solids from the effluent and collecting the sludge in a well and then giving it the treatment aerobically through lagoons.
