ABSTRACT

Malaysian contemporary dance as a reflection of contemporaneous Malaysia cultural has had a multi-dimensional development, in terms of technique, theme, space, dance form, and music. In the Malaysian context, Chinese choreographers and dancers have contributed significantly to shaping the identity of Malaysian contemporary dance. Under such open regulations, the Chinese cultural dance and contemporary dance in Malaysia flourished in the Chinese community. The Malaysian Chinese, being the second largest ethnic group in this country, have played a major role in Malaysia’s economic progress. In 2003, Crossing Three Generations presented by Batu Dance Theatre founded by Vincent Tan Lian Hoo featured individual and collaborative works between Vincent Tan Lian Hoo, Kuik Swee Boon and Wong Jye Shyong. Nyoba Kan promotes Butoh widely in Malaysia and has created a regular audience for its works. The observation and analysis of everyday life and experiences in Malaysia’s postcolonial and multicultural society has greatly influenced its contemporary dance performance.
