ABSTRACT

Rituals and especially Vedic rituals are considered as rule-bound and stipulated actions. Instead of the emotional spontaneity, the ritualist tradition lays considerable emphasis on the preservation of the given ritual sequences and on their faithful execution. Like the ritualist division of rituals in daily or permanent duties, the occasional obligations and optional rites, the ritual activities in Pustimarga are also classified as daily service, occasional celebrations and special aspirations. Natural, unconscious emotional actions are accepted as seva unlike actions with a conscious ritual decision in case of Vedic rites. To conclude, two parallel efforts can be discerned: as founder of a new religious denomination Vallabhacarya introduced novel conceptual and practical elements in the ritual life of his followers and as follower of the Vedic tradition, Vallabhacarya also strives to establish that his philosophy is in accordance with the teachings of Veda.
