ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to examine how the increasing importance of cyberspace or the virtual sphere as a forum for discussion and activism has influenced, or even transformed the idea of the public sphere as the people understand it. The essay seeks thus to understand through an analysis of some such Facebook campaigns, how Facebook activism constitutes an integral part of the current virtual public sphere and how it has contributed to the evolution of the idea of the public sphere. While it began as a group on Facebook, it soon transformed into a massive offline movement wherein piles of underwear were sent to the office of the Sri Rama Sene from all across the nation in response to the acts of violence against women. The case of the 'Pink Chaddhi Campaign' goes on to prove yet again how virtual activism is not a replacement for actual protest movements, but is a platform for organizing them, mobilizing support and disseminating information.
