ABSTRACT

Lambada tribes in India have a rich tradition of oral literature, which includes folksongs, tales, riddles, myths, aphorisms, and legends which have been told and preserved in their community from past generations. Earlier Lambanis lived in the northern states of India, but at present they can be found anywhere in India. This chapter introduces the aphorisms of the Lambada community and shows the richness and uniqueness of their culture. The earliest aphorisms were a collection of medical sayings by Hippocrates. Lambanis express their feelings in the form of aphorisms such as ‘Kaanema Dam Chainpani Gatla Chadan Nachu Ko Kachae’. The narrative aphorisms certainly occupy an important role in the traditional poetic forms of Lambada folk literature. The Lambada relate different kinds of aphorism during the celebration of rites and rituals.
