ABSTRACT

The responsibility for managing and leading on the support for children with medical conditions may not be directly attributed to the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) role in policy. However, in practice, some schools will appoint the SENCO as the designated staff member to lead on this area. Managing the treatments for medical conditions can be challenging, and when working with children and young people, there will be occasions where they will need additional support, whether this is remembering appointments, taking medication, accessing therapies or other forms of support. Some medical conditions will also be classified as disabilities as defined in the Equality Act 2010. Essentially, the governing body or equivalent has the responsibility for meeting the duties schools must implement to support learners with medical conditions. Schools need to have a medical conditions policy which is reviewed regularly and is accessible to staff and parents.
