ABSTRACT

By analysing the pervasive romantic plot in pop culture, this chapter argues for storytelling to move beyond an over-emphasis on romance as a baseline for plot. Broader interpretation and representation of what it means to be human are necessary: embracing narratives that develop plots and characters beyond an overtly romantic focus allows a much-needed space for wider representation. Marilynne Robinson’s 1980 novel Housekeeping is analysed to approach storytelling beyond this pervasive romantic paradigm, as well as a discussion of ACE representation in the media.
