ABSTRACT

Living systems-minded school leaders value play as a pathway for learning. They prioritize recess and encourage teachers to take their students outside for unstructured play and learning time. They ensure play spaces include a rich variety of features, inviting exploration, challenge, creativity, and restoration. Living systems-minded school leaders cultivate a school culture that honors individual needs and empowers teachers and students to make appropriate choices for their own and collective well-being. They know outdoor, unstructured play helps restore attention and energy for learning.
