ABSTRACT

The aim of ensuring more equity-centred science museums is not a simple task, particularly in a context of geographically immense countries that face economic and social inequalities. With this in mind, science communicators – practitioners and scholars alike – have attempted to ascertain who has access to science museums, while they have also analyzed the potential that these facilities have to foster diversity. Quantitative and qualitative research has been conducted in order to understand broader contexts and specific issues around the participation of different parts of the population in science museums and how museums staff are leading this inclusive perspective in their institutions. In this chapter, we will also focus on people with disabilities’ experiences in science museum visits, as well as bring results of research conducted with the museum management personnel about institutional policies, programs, funding and training towards more inclusive museums and with explainers and museum educators about their opinions about their work.
