ABSTRACT
The United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) had its beginnings in 1836 when a small library was established in the office of the Surgeon General of the U.S. Army. In the autumn of 1864, an Army Surgeon, John Shaw Billings, was given the temporary assignment of putting into order this small collection of books and journals.
