ABSTRACT

There is no single policy in the United Kingdom that covers family involvement in early childhood education and care (ECEC). Like the ECEC system in the United Kingdom, each constituent country (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) adopts a different approach although they draw on some common values regarding the role of families in young children’s lives. This chapter provides examples from policy and practice to illustrate the commonalities and differences in the United Kingdom. Consideration is given to the training of teachers and other professionals who work with young children to highlight the challenges they face in enabling families to participate fully in their children’s educational experiences.
