ABSTRACT
The rich diversity of university library collections may also be a source of tension, particularly when the need for substantial, incremental resources recur in one sector. Coupled with pressures to support current research, budget constraints may be converting many academic science libraries into working collections. Addressing the challenges requires understanding the nature of contemporary science and the critical role academic science libraries play in it.
