ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses research methods that have been drawn on in the examination of writing for publication and the peer review of submissions to academic journals. Examples of studies in each of these areas will be discussed, as will the research methods and approaches that have been employed in these studies. These will range from quantitative approaches which have been employed to examine linguistic features of published research articles through to qualitative approaches which have examined authors’ experiences of writing research articles and getting published in academic journals. Similarly, approaches will be discussed that have been drawn on to examine linguistic and other features of reviewers’ report as well as ways in which the experiences of authors dealing with the process of peer review have been examined. The process of reviewer training will also be discussed. Proposals will be made for further research in each of these areas.
