ABSTRACT

This chapter explores issues that are critical to broadening the scope of mixed methods research (MMR) in applied linguistics (AL). Considering the premise that expanding the scope of MMR in AL depends upon expanding its key dimensions, the chapter will address issues related to the development of these dimensions (i.e., philosophical, theoretical, methodological, pedagogical, literacy, discourse, and human element dimensions). The chapter will end with a brief treatment of how various MMR dimensions can interact synergistically to contribute to the growth of MMR in AL with regards to social, political, and economic characteristics of the contexts in which MMR will be utilized.
