ABSTRACT

Born in Italy, Augustus Bozzi Granville, indeed a well-travelled man, was a physician who also worked for the British Navy and later in London, in addition to being a promoter of Italian independence and the author of several books about spas and seaside resorts. The two-volume work The Spas of Germany, which reacted to the growing popularity of German spas, was followed in 1841 by the three volumes of The Spas of England, and Principal Sea-Bathing Places. Granville’s guidebooks, which combined medical guidance with tourist advice, catered for health-seekers and accompanying family members as well as tourists who were merely in need of a holiday. To the contemporary traveller, the value of this comprehensive handbook lay in the wealth of practical information it provided. Harrogate, described in the following excerpt, is a spa with a long history that possesses both chalybeate and sulphur springs.
