ABSTRACT

The travelling expenses are now settled and clearly defined by the arrangement of Tourist Tickets, and the combinations are such as to enable the Tourist to select any route, long or short, and at almost any amount of cash. It is a fact that some can never leave a coach without giving a fee, nor get into or out of a railway carriage without dropping something slyly into the hands of porters, however stringent may be the company’s rules against gratuities. It is but justice to the Hotel-keepers of the Highlands to defend them against the charges of exorbitancy which have sometimes been preferred against them. The effect of the spread of respectable Temperance Hotels has, especially in Scotland, been extensively felt by the old establishments. The secret drinking houses are generally the most corrupt, and the people never desire to give them the least support.
