ABSTRACT

The hotel stands facing Neville Street, at the east corner of the station. It has a frontage of 310½ feet, commands an extensive view of the main thoroughfare of the town, and overlooks what may be called the Trafalgar Square of Newcastle. The main entrance to the hotel is under the verandah and stone portico, and through the entrance lobby to the hall, up a short flight of steps. For the interior decoration, particular attention has been given to obtain the materials capable of giving the most varied amount of artistic treatment combined with substantial and durable results. The portico ceiling is treated with ivory, light sage green and blue grey tiles. The station entrance, which connects the station with the great hall, is entirely treated in faïence, the windows and doors being surrounded with moulded pilaster with arched heads and ornamental spandrils, panelled and enriched frieze, and cor-nice.
